THRU · 40L & LITE · 50L
2023 Updates Explained

Since 2017 our flagship THRU and LITE pack models have been the go to choice for thru hikers, section hikers and weekend backpackers looking to save weight in their pack system without compromising comfort. While the THRU and LITE initially were introduced as frameless backpacks, these two models were completely redesigned in 2021 to feature an internal frame system. This new frame system elevated the performance of these packs to maximize the comfort and function on trail.

Moving into 2023, the THRU 40L and LITE 50L have again been redesigned and updated to maximize performance, reduce overall pack weight, and provide the highest level of comfort. The following will cover all of the design updates in greater detail.

THRU · 40L

The THRU · 40L as the name suggests is a 40 liter capacity framed backpack that's designed for a hiker that's focused on saving weight in their backpacking gear as a whole, but needs the benefits that an internal frame system provides. The THRU will carry 35 pounds of gear comfortably, which makes this minimal focused pack an ideal choice for thru hikers who would need to carry a bear canister and/or additional water for long water carries.

Design Changes:

Back Panel, Lumbar, Hip Belt:

For 2023 the THRU has had a complete redesign of the back panel, hip belt, and frame system. We've modified the width of the lumbar section to allow for the sewn in hip belt to wrap more around the hikers waist. This creates a tighter, more secure fit, and allows for the frame system to more appropriately distribute the weight of the pack to the hip belt.

For the frame system we are now using 6061 Aluminum Round Bar in two pre shaped stays. Round bar increases strength of the frame system compared to flat bar, which maximizes the ability for the pack to carry heavier loads without putting stress on the frame system. These stays are sewn directly into the hip belt system and run up to the load lifters of the pack.

Premium Ultra Stretch Front Pocket:

As a standard feature of the backpack, the front pocket is made using premium Ultra Stretch fabric. Ultra is an Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene (UHMWP) fiber that is highly abrasion and cut resistant that is woven through a 4-way stretch mesh. This make Ultra Stretch the ideal pocket fabric for the greatest performance against snagging on downed trees, bushwhacking, and abrasion against rocks.

Side Pockets:

A completely new side pocket design has been adapted to the THRU for 2023. The side pockets now feature a gusseted, three dimensional design that increases volume and the ability to carry multiple water bottles and bulky items. These side pockets are shaped to drop toward the back, making it easy to reach back and grab bottles without needing to take the pack off.

The volume of the pockets will accommodate carrying some small shelters/tarps if the design of your shelter doesn't allow for packing it inside the pack. Some examples of tents that will fit in the side pocket include, TarpTent Notch, Aeon Li, Durston X-Mid 1, Big Agnes Tigerwall UL1, Gossamer Gear The One, and other similar sized tents/tarps.

Pack Body and Other Features:

The THRU also received updates to the design of the body of the pack. The profile of the pack increased depth in key areas that make packing your gear easier, and distributes your gear into segments of the pack that allow for the frame to carry the weight more comfortably. The bottom of the THRU is slightly narrowed, making it easier to fill the bottom with sleeping gear, which then puts your heaviest gear above the hip belt and closest to your back for the most comfortable carry possible.

The standard over the top Y-Strap allows for easy carry of a bear canister, such as a BV475/BV500. There is also now a small webbing loop at the front of the pack above the front pocket that can be used to clip gear items to like lightweight camp shoes, Kula Cloth, or other lightweight items.

LITE · 50L

Coming in at 50 liters of capacity, the LITE hits a sweet spot in volume for hikers who need a larger pack for weekend backpacking, thru hiking, and shoulder season trips. For 2023 we've updated the LITE to maximize function, reduce weight, and increase overall comfort.
The redesigned back panel of the LITE improves on the carry capacity of the pack, making it capable of carrying 35-40 pounds comfortably. That makes the LITE a great choice for thru hikers who have an overall heavier base weight, and need additional volume for longer food and water carries. For the weekend backpacker looking to save weight, the LITE comes in at just over 2 pounds, which saves pounds of weight over more traditional internal frame backpacks.

Design Changes:

Back Panel, Lumbar, Hip Belt:

For 2023 the LITE has had a complete redesign of the back panel, hip belt, and frame system.

The increased height of the area above the shoulder straps to the load lifters allows for a more comfortable carry when the load lifters are engaged. This height makes for a proper angle for the lifters and allows the weight of the pack to be brought closer to the back and engage the entire frame system to distribute weight to the hips appropriately.

A completely new side pocket design has been adapted to the LITE for 2023. The previous generation LITE had a tall pocket on the left side of the pack. This tall pocket made it difficult to get bottles out with the pack on for that side. The 2023 version now features standard height pockets on both sides.

The LITE also received updates to the design of the body of the pack. The profile of the pack increased depth in key areas that make packing your gear easier, and distributes your gear into segments of the pack that allow for the frame to carry the weight more comfortably. The bottom of the LITE is slightly narrowed, making it easier to fill the bottom with sleeping gear, which then puts your heaviest gear above the hip belt and closest to your back for the most comfortable carry possible.

The standard over the top Y-Strap allows for easy carry of a bear canister, such as a BV475/BV500. There is also now a small webbing loop at the front of the pack above the front pocket that can be used to clip gear items to like lightweight camp shoes, Kula Cloth, or other lightweight items.

We've taken the minimal yet functional design of our flagship framed pack series and included everything that's essential for an enjoyable time on the trail. With each pack coming in at just over 2 pounds of weight, and an internal frame system that's designed to comfortably carry 35-40 pounds, you can leave the trailhead feeling confident your Waymark THRU or LITE will handle everything you throw at it.
