Trail Day With Cottonwood Canyons Foundation

Trail Day With Cottonwood Canyons Foundation

After a long season of use, the Red Pine Trail in Little Cottonwood Canyon, UT was in need of some maintenance. The Waymark Gear team joined the trail crew from the Cottonwood Canyons Foundation to perform this maintenance on the trail.

Giving back to public lands is an important part of who we are at Waymark Gear Co, and volunteering time to give back to our trails makes a huge difference in the impact these trails see over a busy season.

Cleaning out trail drains was our objective on this volunteer day. After a full season of use and rain water moving material down the trail, these drains get full or debris and rocks and aren't as effective at moving rain water off the trail. Working with the trail crew we used various tools to dig out the debris and create channels within the trail that work like a gutter on your house to move water away from the trail. Ultimately this helps prevent erosion and keeps the trails in better condition.

We worked throughout the day moving up the Red Pine trail and ultimately making it all the way to Red Pine Lake where we were able to be some of the first hikers to use a brand new section of trail. This new section of trail had been rerouted by the Forest Service to add switch backs to a steep section of trail as you approach the lake. It was awesome to see the work the Forest Service had put into the trail to make it more sustainable and accessible for future use.

We encourage anyone who uses our public lands to consider taking time to volunteer and giveback to the lands we have access to.
